Danish Champions!

Danish Champions!

It has long been a close race for the title between F.C. Copenhagen and Brøndby. Lately, however, the lions have been in front and when Brøndby somewhat surprinsingly lost away to AGF in Aarhus the F.C. Copenhagen side were suddenly handed a chance to win the league championship prematurely in the penultimate round against Esbjerg. Although previously they had not won a game there in five years this time the boys in white did what they came to do, and thereby they also secured an unassailable five-point lead before the final game against Randers, thus making F.C. Copenhagen Danish champions for the seventh time overall.

- Winning the championship is just amazing but, really, we did deserve to do so. We have played some excellent football, especially at home, and all the players here are top class – we are indeed a complete side, concluded Ailton Almeida

- At the start of the season we all felt that we had a chance at winning the championship but, in reality, we had quite a few new players which of course required some adjustments on the team, and so partly because of this and partly because of injuries we didn’t get off to the best of starts. Following the UEFA Cup games against Lillestrøm however, we have constantly grown as a team throughout the season, and I am relieved by the fact that by winning today we have managed to set things straight earlier rather than later. If, at the beginning, anyone had told me that winning the championship would require at least 73 points I would never have believed him! Coach Ståle Solbakken.

- Next step is Europe, possibly the Champions League, and it is so gratifying, I mean this is the very reason I came here in the first place! I wanted to feel the pressure and excitement of a big club and I came to F.C. Copenhagen because I want to accomplish great things, promised Ulrik Laursen.

Through the 2008/2009 title F.C. Copenhagen continues its recent domination of the SAS Liga as the lions have in fact now won 6 of the last 9 Danish championships. However, the 2009 championship came just three days after the lions had won the cup, and so this year the team has shown absolute domestic supremacy by taking the rare double.
