F.C. Copenhagen Women secure promotion in inaugural season

F.C. Copenhagen Women have secured promotion to Denmark's second tier in their inaugural season after beating AaB 3-2 in Vanløse on Sunday.

Two goals from Frederikke Boisen and a Maria Hovmark strike earned the Lionesses the win in front of 1,155 jubilant fans.

"It's almost unbelievable, it's been so great for all these amazing women and the support on the stands today was really sublime, so we're just happy all the way," said head of women's football Rebecca Steele.

"It means an incredible amount for us to secure promotion already and at the first attempt.

"Now we can just relax and finish the season – although we do also have a match in Parken on 8 June, which we are really looking forward to.

"Promotion was one of the biggest milestones when we started the season, but we have to progress next season too. There is one more promotion before we are at the very highest level, and that is a clear vision for the team.

"But it has been a wild journey so far, where we have come a long way in a short time and have created a squad and an environment that can compete at the highest level, as we showed in the cup semi-finals against Fortuna Hjørring. So we just have to keep doing what we do, because that is what we are really good at."

FCK Women's Frederikke Benfeldt said: "It's great, just what we had hoped for, and great to be able to secure promotion with a few games to go.

"It was a bit difficult for us in the first half, where we had difficulty finding each other, but in a hectic second half we were just efficient."

Goalscorer Hovmark said: "Promotion means everything, that's what we've been working for every day.

"We're going to celebrate tonight, but we also have a game next weekend, so we're not celebrating 100% yet. We can do that after the last game in Parken, which I'm really looking forward to. I hope everyone is and I hope to see everyone in Parken on that Sunday, because it's going to be historic!

The victory means FCK remain in first place in the table, three points ahead of AaB, with three more games in the Second Division still to play.

The next match is Saturday 17 May at 1pm away against Varde, while our next home game is Saturday 24 May at 2pm against Aalborg Freja.

Remember that the last match of the season will be played in Parken on 8 June. Admission is free but fans are encouraged to book tickets in advance at BILLET.FCK.DK.
