Rebecca Steele to leave F.C. Copenhagen in September

F.C. Copenhagen's head of women's football Rebecca Steele will step down from her role in September.

Rebecca was the first hire made for F.C. Copenhagen's women's team just over two years ago. She was handed the huge task of creating a women's team and delivering what the club now has – a strong and well-functioning unit.

The Lionesses have achieved impressive results in record time, having already been promoted to the 1st Division after just one season in existence. FCK Women also reached the Danish Cup semi-finals – the first 2nd Division team to make it that far. We have also broken the attendance record for a women's league match, while a committed fan base is steadily growing.

All of this has happened in just 9 months, as the women took to the pitch for the first time on 14 August 2024.

Sune Smith-Nielsen: Rebecca has made a huge difference
"Rebecca has made a huge difference to our women’s team. Her importance cannot be overstated, and we are deeply grateful for Rebecca’s commitment and the many hours she has put into creating this historic team," says F.C. Copenhagen’s sporting director, Sune Smith-Nielsen.

Rebecca Steele: A difficult decision
Reflecting on her time at FCK Women, which doesn't end until the autumn, Rebecca says: "It has been a difficult decision and not one I have made overnight.

"I am extraordinarily proud of where the Lionesses stand today. When I was hired, I was faced with a blank slate that needed to be transformed into the foundation of a successful women’s team with all that that entails. And that, I believe, in all modesty, is what we have today.

"With the results we have achieved for women’s football at F.C. Copenhagen, the time is right for me to stop and give myself space to reflect on the next chapter in my working life."

Promotion to the 1st Division became a reality with last weekend’s 3-2 victory over AaB, and the Lionesses continue to aim to reach the Kvindeligaen (women's top flight).

The search for the new head of women’s football will begin over the summer, and F.C. Copenhagen’s incoming development director, Morten Grahn, will take overall responsibility for the women’s team when he takes office on 1 September.

"It means an incredible amount to me to be here until September, so that I can hand over the women’s team to Morten and help send the Lionesses on their way,” says Rebecca."

Jacob Lauesen: A fantastic work
Jacob Lauesen, CEO of F.C. Copenhagen and director of the subsidiary F.C. Copenhagen Women's Football A/S, says:

"We owe Rebecca a big thank you for her fantastic work, which has put us in a position with the women's team that we hardly dared to dream of when Rebecca was hired just over two years ago.

"Rebecca has been a huge asset to F.C. Copenhagen and Danish women's football, both as a leader and role model."
