Oviedo earns Player of Tournament accolade

FC Copenhagen winger Bryan Oviedo won more than just the DBU Cup in midweek, picking up the Player of the Tournament award as well.

Oviedo was fully deserving of the award, which honours the best player of the entire tournament. He is just the third Copenhagen man to achieve this feat, and receives an honourable place in the history books.

FCK head coach Carsten V. Jensen was the first player from the club to earn the award, back in 1995. CV was instrumental in Copenhagen’s route to the final, and played a dominant role in their 5-0 win against Akademisk Boldklub.

The second Lions player to receive the honour was Mr. Copenhagen himself: Hjalte Bo Nørregaard. The former captain helped FCK win the Cup in 2004, when Morten Bisgaard scored midway through the first half against AaB.

Oviedo is the first non-European to win the Player of the Tournament award. The title has three times previously gone to non-Danish players (two Swedes and a Pole) but on Thursday the Danish football map was considerably widened.

Looking at the list of Player of the Tournament awards, a fair few names connected with the club come up. Right-back Lars Jacobsen won the honour for OB back in 2002, when the Fyn club beat FCK 2-1. Other former players include Henrik Larsen (1990), Jorgen Juul Jensen (1994), Carsten Fredgaard (2006) and Johan Absalonsen (2007) who were all playing for different clubs before joining FCK.
