47-year-old Nilsson has an impressive track record in football. Capped 116 times for his country, Nilsson has won the UEFA Cup, numerous Swedish league titles as player and coach and most recently was nominated Swedish Manager of the Year 2011.

FC Copenhagen’s Sporting Director Carsten V. Jensen explained the procedure to securing the coach, who will take over from Ståle Solbakken:

- We had a certain criteria for selecting a new head coach, which included style of football, international experience, Scandinavian background and proven result record. Roland Nilsson more than lives up to these criteria. At the same time he possesses the human qualities that we appreciate. Therefore the choice of Roland is logical, and we are very happy with the whole process. We look forward to presenting Roland in Copenhagen.

- Roland will begin his work at FC Copenhagen as soon as possible. We are in good dialogue with Malmo FF (the club Nilsson currently manages) and I am convinced that both parties are interested in finding a sensible solution. Under any circumstance it is clear that we will have a new head coach starting 1 July.

FC Copenhagen CEO Anders Hørsholt also gave his opinion on how the relationship between Nilsson and FCK should propel the club to even further success:

- With the managerial appointment of Roland Nilsson at Scandinavia's biggest football club, we have taken a very important step in relation to ensuring the continued stability and development that has characterised FCK over the last few years. Roland and the club have very high sporting ambitions both nationally and overseas. In other words, this is a perfect match for our ongoing strategic work and our high level of ambition.
