Lions could relegate AaB

There is now just one round of games remaining of the 2010/11 Danish Superliga, and FC Copenhagen will cap off a magnificent season in PARKEN against AaB on Sunday. Although the Lions confirmed their title as Danish champions some weeks ago, AaB are still in the heat of a relegation battle involving four clubs.

AaB did not have a particularly good autumn half of the season, and went into the winter break with just 16 points after 19 Superliga matches. The spring season appeared not to have lifted the team either, as they received a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of OB in their first game back.

The club was relatively active in the transfer market this spring however, and with Michael Lumb, Thomas Augustinussen and Morten Rasmussen all new faces in the squad, it did not take long before they began to claw back some much needed points. Indeed, was the Superliga to be decided on spring form alone, AaB would be in third place, together with FC Midtjylland, and surpassed only by OB (23 points) and FC Copenhagen (27 points).

One player who has delivered the goods is Rasmussen, whose six goals have helped to push AaB up the table this spring. The only problem is that Rasmussen has not scored in his last three, a spell that resulted in just one point being earned, as the club slipped back towards the relegation zone.

AaB are therefore in danger of being relegated, and if Copenhagen on Sunday take their season wins tally to 25, then the Jutland side must hope other results go their way. Lyngby – equal on 35 points but with a lower goal difference – play an OB side confirmed in second place. Meanwhile, the bottom two go head-to-head in a game neither can afford to draw, let alone lose. If Esbjerg and Randers end even, they both go down. However, victory for one team may still not be enough, depending on other results.

FC Copenhagen v AaB

In PARKEN the clubs have met 29 times: 14 of the matches FCK won, eight have ended up a draw and seven times AaB left the pitch as winners. The aggregate score is 52-37 in favour of Copenhagen.

Looking at every encounter, both at home and away, the two clubs have met 63 times, with FCK claiming 31 victories. 18 games have been drawn, while 14 matches have been lost. Copenhagen, in 63 games, have scored 97 goals, conceding 76.

This season’s first meeting between the two sides came in the third round of matches. AaB went ahead thanks to a Kasper Bøgelund goal after just seven minutes, but when Lasse Nielsen in the second half fouled Dame N’Doye for a penalty, César Santin stepped up to equalise for the home side. The match ended 1-1.

The latest meeting was at the Energi Nord Arena in mid-March. It appeared the clubs were destined for another share of the points, before Christian Bolaños scored for FCK, securing a 1-0 victory.
