FC Copenhagen’s spirited fight-back from three goals down fell one short in Brøndby Stadium on Saturday.

The Danish champions went a goal down just 24 minutes in when Thomas Delaney tripped Alexander Szymanowski in the box – the Argentine burying his penalty left of Johan Wiland for 1-0.

Szymanowski was on hand a minute before half time to double Brøndby’s lead with a magnificent volley from a well-worked corner, FCK’s defence caught short in the box.

It was 3-0 to the home side just after the break when Simon Makienok worked his way into a shooting position on the edge of the FCK box, firing low past Wiland before captain Lars Jacobsen could block the danger.

Copenhagen showed they weren’t down and out, however, and on 63 minutes Fanendo Adi earned a penalty when upended in the BIF area. Adi calmly passed into the same corner as Szymanowski to hand FCK a lifeline.

Their comeback continued when Youssouf Toutouh controlled and lobbed the BIF goalkeeper from 20 yards out, finding the top corner of the net for a second game in succession.

Copenhagen pushed for an equaliser late on but suffered a red card for their forward gamble when last-man Pierre Bengtsson tripped former FCKer Kenneth Zohore, preventing a sure counter attack.

On Tuesday FCK will fly out to Madrid for their Champions League clash with Real.
