F.C. Copenhagen in the Cup final

This year the Danish Cup final will be between F.C. Copenhagen and AaB, last years Danish Champions. The final will be played on “Kr. Himmelfartsdag” Thursday the 21st of May at 1500.

F.C. Copenhagen has been both god and lucky on their way to the final, as they haven’t met any opponents from the SAS League, but only teams from the lower divisions, and in the semi-final the opposing side wasn’t even playing in the divisions, but in “Danmarksserien” just below Division 2.

In September it all started with a solid 4-0 win in Slagelse against FC Vestsjæl-land. The four goals were scored by William Kvist, José Junior and two from Ailton Almeida.

A month later, F.C. Copenhagen travelled to Næstved – and once again Ailton Almeida scored two and José Junior one and this meant a 3-0 win.

In the quarter-final F.C. Copenhagen had to play Lyngby, and this game ended up being quite exciting. After having played 90 minutes of regular football, the score was 0-0, and this was also the score after 30 minutes of extra time. In the deciding penalty shootout, F.C. Copenhagen turned out to be the best team – and F.C. Copenhagen advanced to the semi-final with a 4-2 win.

In the semi-final F.C. Copenhagen played Nordvest FC from Danmarksserien, and the first leg of the tie was took place in at Nordvest’s Stadion in Holbæk. At half-time “the Lions of Copenhagen” were up 1-0 on a Niclas Jensen goal, and in the second half, Hjalte Bo Nørregaard scored once (a real beauty) and Dame N’Doye added two more, and with the 4-0-result in hand – no one doubted that F.C. Copenhagen would reach the final. F.C. Copenhagen won the return-leg at home in PARKEN with 2-1. Nordvest did get a fantastic start and scored after just 55 sec-onds, but Dame N’Doye levelled the score – and Morten Nordstrand scored the 2-1-winner.

In the Cup final on the 21st of May, F.C. Copenhagen will once again face AaB, the reigning Danish Champion – a title they will soon have to hand over to a new Champion, and hopefully this is F.C. Copenhagen.

AaB reached the Cup final by eliminating Brønshøj (3-2), FC Fredericia (1-0), FC Nordsjælland (2-1) and the semi-final against Brøndby was won on the away-goal rule. The first leg in Brøndby ended 3-3, and as the score in the second leg was 1-1, it was AaB that went on to meet F.C. Copenhagen in the final.

F.C. Copenhagen and AaB also clashed in the 2004 Cup Final, and back then F.C. Copenhagen won 1-0 on a first half goal from Morten Bisgaard. F.C. Copenhagen also won the title that year, and by doing that, won The Double. Winning The Double is an achievement which could be repeated this season.

Even though the game is being played in PARKEN, F.C. Copenhagen has been drawn to be the away-team and because of that, they will play the game in their black “uniform”.
