FC Copenhagen sign Nicolaj Thomsen

FC Copenhagen can confirm the signing of Nicolaj Thomsen from Nantes on a four-and-a-half year deal.

Thomsen, who won the Danish title with AaB in 2014, arrives at the club from Ligue 1 side Nantes immediately.

“We are pleased that we can attract the best and most talented Danish players and that Danish footballers who choose to return home from abroad look to Copenhagen as a good choice for their future and development,” said FCK director Anders Horsholt.

“We welcome the fact that Nicolaj Thomsen believes in the club and we look forward to seeing him in a white shirt.”

FCK manager Ståle Solbakken added: “Nicolaj is a player we've always thought of as really good, but who has been beyond our reach when last year he chose to go to Nantes.

“Now the situation is different, and we are pleased that we have been given the opportunity to sign him for FCK.

“He is a skilled two-way player with a good offensive mind and competitive in defence.

“He is still young and has the opportunity to develop himself and the team. He is a different type of midfielder than those we already have, so he is a strong addition to the squad.

“Right now he's injured, so it will take some time before he can compete on equal footing with the others, but it will come, and we look forward to working with Nicolaj.”

Thomsen started his career at AaB and picked up over 100 appearances for the club during five seasons.

He helped AaB win the Danish Superliga title in 2013/14 and also won the DBU Cup on the same campaign.

Thomsen, 23, scored on his Ligue 1 debut for Nantes in a 1-0 away win at Dijon and went on to play 14 more domestic games for the French side.

“FCK is a huge club and the results speak for themselves,” Thomsen said.

“I have known of their interest in the past but the time has not been right. I feel that it is now, after an constructive half-year in France, where I got on well playing under the former coach.

“But now the situation is different and the new coach chose not to bet on me. So the club gave me the green light to find something else - and here was FCK with a wonderful opportunity.

“I see FCK as a bigger club than Nantes and I have great ambitions to win titles here in Copenhagen and help to continue the good run of form that the team is enjoying.

“I’ve also been proud of my time at AaB but now I come to a place in my career where a big club like FCK is the right choice for me.

“I look forward to meeting my new teammates and start training in earnest, though it takes a little while before I am fully fit after my foot injury.”

Thomsen has joined FCK with immediate effect and will wear the No.14 jersey.
