Cornelius denied winner in Champions League draw

Andreas Cornelius was denied another late goal against Leicester as Kasper Schmeichel kept out the striker with a second wonder save in two weeks.

Cornelius got a run on his man to head Peter Ankersen’s cross goalwards - but just like in the reverse clash in England Schmeichel was there to bat it away.

Ankersen and Benjamin Verbic wasted clear chances for the Lions on a night of few openings, while Leicester failed to have a meaningful shot on target.

FC Porto’s 1-0 win over Club Brugge means Copenhagen sit third in Group G, two points behind the Portuguese champions who will visit Telia Parken later this month.

But for manager Ståle Solbakken it could have been three points on the night if his men had just been more clinical.

FCK control early stages

Copenhagen went into the game unbeaten at home since August 2015. Solbakken made just one change from the side that lost 1-0 in Leicester last month, with Rasmus Falk replacing Youssef Toutouh on the right flank.

And Falk was made to do most of the early running in the Lions midfield as both teams fought over possession down the FCK right wing.

Yet it was a move from the left that produced Copenhagen’s first opening, when Federico Santander headed over Ludwig Augustinsson’s cross 11 minutes in.

Much like at the King Power Stadium, Copenhagen enjoyed the majority of possession as Leicester looked to hit on the break.

But chances were few and far between and Thomas Delaney was left frustrated when he blazed an effort high and wide after the ball had broken free in the Foxes box.

Early in the second half and another cross from the left this time gave Falk an opening to shoot but his effort was well blocked.

Lions waste chances

But it was indication of FCK’s intent and minutes later Ankersen smashed over a great chance from inside the box, before Verbic did the same from an even better position.

Copenhagen continued to dominate the ball but tired legs and an awareness of Leicester’s threat on the break meant they rarely penetrated into the Foxes third.

Indeed, it took until the final minute for a cross to reach its man in the air as Cornelius finally got away from robust centre-halves Wes Morgan and Robert Huth.

But Schmeichel’s hand and Federico Santander’s subsequent rebound wide means FCK were denied what would have been three valuable points.
