Hjalte Bo Nørregaard leaves F.C. Copenhagen to become head coach at Esbjerg fB

One of F.C. Copenhagen’s true club icons is now taking the next step in his career, as Hjalte Bo Nørregaard steps down as assistant coach to take over as head coach of the 1st Division club Esbjerg fB.

Nørregaard’s story at F.C. Copenhagen and KB goes back a long way. As a player, he made 320 appearances in the white shirt; his iconic, title-deciding goal in 2003, in particular, cemented his place in FCK history. It was a moment the fans celebrated as recently as last Sunday with a spectacular tifo.

Throughout his playing career and subsequent coaching work, Nørregaard has been an integral part of the club. He completed his coaching education within the FCK Talent setup, managed various youth teams, and briefly stepped in as interim head coach for the first team for three matches in the autumn of 2020. He has served as assistant coach for the first team since 2022.

A talented colleague and history-maker moves on
F.C. Copenhagen's Director of Football Kristjaan Speakman says the club fully understand Nørregaard’s decision to seek new challenges as a head coach at the senior level.

"Hjalte has been a highly valued member of staff for many years and has helped make history both on and off the pitch," says Speakman.

"Hjalte has been presented with an opportunity – and consequently developed a desire – to test himself as a head coach at the senior level. We have a proud tradition of developing coaches, and this is not an opportunity we can stand in the way of.

"We therefore wish Hjalte and his family all the best for the future."

A natural moment for his next step
After spending more than half his life at the club, Nørregaard looks back on a time filled with ups and downs, titles, and strong bonds. For him, the timing feels exactly right to try his hand at a new role.

"I’ve spent over half my life on these grounds and have had so many amazing experiences across several different spells," says Nørregaard.

"I’ve been part of fun and exciting groups, won many football matches, and had the privilege of lifting many trophies. My time at FCK has offered a bit of everything.

"Perhaps the tifo the other day featuring 'Hjalte Park' was a fitting way to wrap things up for now. It’s been 23 years since I scored that goal, and I feel this is a good time to conclude my chapter at F.C. Copenhagen.

"The club is in an exciting place and moving in the right direction, but I’m ready for the next step. Drawing on everything I’ve learned at the academy and with the first team, I look forward to putting my experience to the test at a club that really wants me. It’s a hugely exciting opportunity that I look forward to seizing.

"I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way at the club in various roles; I am very grateful for that."
