F.C. Copenhagen sign Asger Sørensen
F.C. Copenhagen are delighted to confirm the signing of Asger Sørensen from Sparta Prague.
The 30-year-old defender joins the Lions after four seasons as a key player and vice-captain of the Czech club. He will wear the number 4 shirt and has signed a three-year contract with F.C. Copenhagen.
The centre-back left Denmark at the age of 18 to join FC Liefering, and has since made a name for himself in Austria and Germany. He was a regular for FC Nürnberg until Sparta Prague head coach Brian Priske took him to the Czech capital in 2022.
Sparta Prague won the Czech league for the first time in nine years in Sørensen's first season in the capital, and the Czech league named him both the best defender of the season and the best foreign player of the season.
Now his ambition is to bring the same quality to F.C. Copenhagen and add new milestones to the club's history.
“For me, it’s not about coming home - it’s about ambitions and development,” says Sørensen.
“I have goals and dreams that I want to achieve, and I chose F.C. Copenhagen precisely because of my ambitions.
“I’m hungry to play in Parken and in Europe, and I’ve actually played in the Superliga before - I’m really looking forward to that.
“I know what the job requires, and I’m coming to Copenhagen to take responsibility. I want to contribute with experience, leadership and physicality, and I’m prepared for the hard work that lies ahead."
Dominant presence in the air
F.C. Copenhagen’s Director of Football, Kristjaan Speakman, says Sørensen's physical presence – standing at 1 metre and 91cm – is a dominant factor for the team.
"We wanted to bring in a physically strong centre-back – Asger has these qualities, but his profile contains much more; his skills with the ball are at a high level, and his leadership qualities will benefit our squad," says Speakman.
"We had to be patient with the deal, and we are incredibly happy to welcome him and his family to F.C. Copenhagen.
"He has performed at a very high level in both domestic and European matches, and we feel that his profile is the perfect complement to the other players we have in the squad."
Svensson: Experience and calm at the back
Head coach Bo Svensson is also looking forward to having Sørensen in defence.
"Asger brings routine and calm to our back line. He is composed with both his feet and his head, and he takes a lot of responsibility for the team. At the same time, he is extremely forward-thinking in defence," says Svensson.
