Thomas Delaney

Delaney header keeps FCK top of Superliga

Thomas Delaney's late equaliser earned F.C. Copenhagen a 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland on Sunday and kept the Lions a point in front of FCM in the Danish Superliga title race.

Delaney popped up with the leveller seven minutes from time to send a packed Parken Stadium into raptures.

The draw means the Lions stay a point ahead of FCM with just two league games to play.

"It was an even match," said head coach Jacob Neestrup. "They started the better and we finished the better. They had the ball a lot in the first 10-15 minutes, but then we worked our way into the match and had some close chances. But just as we'd set up the match where we wanted, they punished us with their goal.

“But in the second half we showed that we have a wide squad and a strong bench, and the substitutes made the difference again today. We put a lot of pressure on them in the last 15-20 minutes. It was only a matter of time before we scored.

“With a little luck and sharpness, we could have even taken all three points in the end. But all in all, no one can object to the fact that it ended in a draw. There was a lot of physicality, intensity and battles across the pitch.

“We can still decide everything ourselves, but both we and Midtjylland have two tough matches ahead. I expect us to need six points in the last two matches for the championship to come to Copenhagen.

"But after the two very painful defeats to Brøndby and Midtjylland earlier in the Championship Round, I would have "sold" the next games for five wins and a draw including a place in the cup final at any time. We still haven't won anything, but we are in as favourable a position as we can be."

Next up for FCK is a trip to third-placed Randers on Sunday, while Midtjylland travel to Brøndby.

FCK then host FC Nordsjælland on the last day of the season (25 May) before a cup final with Silkeborg on 29 May.
