Zanka appointed new club captain

Mathias Zanka was handed the captaincy for FC Copenhagen’s first match of the 2011/12 season, a 2-0 win in SønderjyskE, as head coach Roland Nilsson elected the defender his first choice skipper following the summer departure of William Kvist.

After the weekend announcement, Zanka was on hand to talk to FCK.DK, and discuss the importance of such a role:

- Of course I am very proud to be appointed as the club's new captain. Copenhagen is my city, and FCK is my team, so it makes me extra happy to call me captain. I do not expect that I will change my style of play because of an extra job on the pitch, but I am well aware that an extra responsibility arises when you are captain. I am looking forward to taking over from William Kvist.

Nilsson himself confirmed his decision to give the centre back the armband:

- I am convinced that Zanka can go and be a great captain of the team. He knows the club and despite his young age, he has played many matches for us in both the Superliga and in Europe. Zanka exudes a calmness and maturity on the pitch that is very unusual for someone his age. I have full confidence in Zanka and look forward to working with him.

The post of secondary captain has been awarded to goalkeeper Johan Wiland.
