Ten years ago a star was born

The 10 June 2001 is a date all FCK fans should remember, as it was the day South African striker Sibusiso Zuma scored the goal that secured FC Copenhagen their second Danish championship. The goal is also still remembered as one of the most beautiful ever scored in Superliga history.

Copenhagen won the 1992/93 championship in the club's first Superliga season, to which then followed a number of seasons without any title success. The 2000/01 season came after many years of waiting. There were signs of change, with first place a real possibility talked about in the PARKEN terraces. Indeed, in the season's penultimate game the Lions were in sight of the Danish title, a championship that would become a reality if they defeated rivals Brøndby IF.

And they succeeded!

Copenhagen dominated the showdown from the first whistle and after 35 minutes Christian Pulsen headed in a corner kick from Niclas Jensen to fire the Lions into the lead. Ten minutes into the second half time and Zuma scored the goal of his career, and in doing so pushed FCK 2-0 up. Here is the description from the original FCK.DK match report:

- The second half was a replica of the first, but with several goals, including one that will go down in history: ten minutes after the break Sibusiso Zuma received a cross from Thorninger, tamed the ball with his chest and in the same movement scissor-kicked the ball into the goal behind a defenceless Mogens Krogh. A formidable strike that will sit imprinted in many minds for several years ahead.

We still remember, and on Friday it was exactly 10 years ago that Sibusiso Zuma scored the amazing goal!

The match ended 3-1, meaning Copenhagen were once again Danish champions. The title arguably moulded a new era for the club, one of success that FCK has hardly looked back at since.
