No more European football this season

Even though F.C. Copenhagen played the ball nicely around for most of the match, they never really got close to scoring – and just as Olympique de Marseille did in PARKEN, the French took full advantage of the chances they created and won 3-1.

Ben Arfa made it 1-0 just before halftime on a perfectly hit volley, Bakari Koné got all alone with keeper Johan Wiland and doubled the score – and 16 minutes later he added one more to give Olympique de Marseille a 3-0 lead. F.C. Copenhagen managed to pull one back, as Ailton Almeida made it 3-1 in the 86th minute.

After 92 minutes and 21 seconds of play the Turkish referee Cüneyt Cakir blew the whistle for the final time, and with an aggregate score of 6-2, Olympique de Marseille will continue to the Round-of-16, where then will play SL Benfica.

F.C. Copenhagen can now focus on the Danish SAS League, which will resume on the 7th March when AGF visits PARKEN.

After the game, Coach Ståle Solbakken said:

- The best team won! We can learn from Marseille, when it comes to scoring on the chances you get. That’s where they are much stronger than us.

Danish International Jesper Grønkjær added:

- It wasn’t the game today that cost us the round-of-16, it was the game in Denmark. In was unnecessary that we lost the game in PARKEN, but it’s difficult to say something really smart after tonight’s game, when you have been eliminated 6-2 on aggregate. Today they were the better team!

F.C. Copenhagen can now concentrate on winning back-to-back titles, and then look forward to some more European football next season.
