Gabriel: Derby atmosphere is why we love football
F.C. Copenhagen's centre-back Gabriel says he is back to full health following an illness, and is ready to contribute 100% to the team heading into this weekend's derby with Brøndby.
Gabriel hasn't featured for the Lions since the Champions League clash at Tottenham.
But the Brazilian is back in contention after returning to training.
“It has been a really bad few weeks, to be honest,” says the 25-year-old. “I have been sick for too long, I've not been able to train properly and not been able to help the team. It hurts when I see that I have not played to my best and not done my part to help the team and the club.
“Now I'm fit again. I feel light and ready to go in the derby. It's the perfect match to get back to my best."
Sunday's derby kicks off at 12 noon in Parken, with fans planning a player reception along Øster Alle two hours before.
Two of Gabriel's six FCK goals have come against Brøndby and he is looking forward to the showdown.
“We lost to them last time, and we’ve had a bad period," he says. "We have everything to go for, and we’re really looking forward as a team to coming to Parken and playing on Sunday.
“Yes, there’s always something extra in these games, and I’m comfortable with that.
“Honestly, my biggest focus is on keeping a clean sheet, and I'll leave the goals to those up front. But if a goal is needed, I’ll do my best to make it happen.”
On fan support
Gabriel also revealed the players are aware of the welcome they are due to receive on Sunday as the team bus arrives at Parken.
“It means everything to us,” he says. “That’s why we play football – for full stadiums and the joy of exciting our fans and our families.
“We have also talked in the squad about how great it will be to receive that reception on Sunday and that it really helps give us the boost we need. The fans should already be thanked for that."
