European qualification changes for 2020/21 season

UEFA have confirmed changes to the qualification process for the Champions League and Europa League following the coronavirus outbreak.

A decision has been made that qualification ties for both tournaments will be competed in one-off games, rather than the two-leg format.

The exception is the Champions League playoff round, which stays as a two-match tie, while the Europa League playoff round will be one match only.

The continent-wide changes to the international football calendar mean that there are not enough available dates to complete the usual qualification schedule.

"We fully acknowledge that the situation is extraordinary and that it has been an incredibly difficult challenge for UEFA to find a solution," says Daniel Rommedahl, FCK Director of Football Operations & International Affairs.

"Against that backdrop, we believe that it is a necessary solution, but that it also naturally changes the nature of the tournament when it is no longer decided over two matches, but instead in one match.

“For us, it is crucial that UEFA strives to ensure that the framework for the upcoming qualification reflects as closely as possible the normal format and nature of the tournament. This can be done in a number of areas, and we will now contribute our input and ideas to that process. We are already working on this, and we must see what the final format and details look like as we get a little closer."
