Alex Rúnarsson

Rúnarsson: Good to be back in goal

Alex Rúnarsson only received confirmation he would be playing in Saturday's Danish Cup second leg at Viborg on the morning of the match – but that didn't surprise F.C. Copenhagen's experienced goalkeeper.

Rúnarsson, 31, made only his second appearance for the Lions during the 2-1 win at Viborg, having made his debut against FCB Magpies on 1 August 2024.

He stood in for Dominik Kotarski and after the game spoke about his role coming into the XI.

“We've known for a while that Dominik's wife is due tomorrow, so of course he'll be home and supporting her,” he said.

“It was great to be back, because of course I've missed playing important matches. I've been training daily with the team for a little over two years, so I know everyone really well.”

Fellow goalkeeper Kotarski had played in every game this season so far, and Rúnarsson spoke highly of the collaboration with him and the other goalkeepers in training - Oscar Buur, who is currently injured, and Tobias Breum-Harild, who was on the bench on Saturday and was also at the winter training camp.

“The competition is tough, as it should be at a club like F.C. Copenhagen, but I just think that's great," added Rúnarsson. "We have a good group of goalkeepers, and I just think that I've gotten better in recent years.

“But of course there's a difference between training every day and playing competitive games, and I can feel that there were maybe a few passes today that I should have taken. But all in all I think it went okay. After all, the most important thing was that we won and have progressed to the final."
