Delaney: The Cup is even more important this season

Thomas Delaney says winning the Danish Cup this season is more important than last season, when the Lions also faced Viborg in the two-legged semi-final.

FCK carry a 2-1 first-leg lead into Saturday's away clash at Viborg, and beat the Jutland side 2-0 on aggregate in the semis last season, en route to winning the Cup.

Delaney didn't play in those semi-finals, nor February's first leg in Parken, but says he's raring to go if called upon this weekend.

"I think it's fair to say that this year it's more important than last year, when we'd won the title heading into the cup final," says Delaney.

"We won't get there [challenge for the title]  this year. So it's of course extra important, and although it's not nice to say, it's the truth for ourselves right now, and we have to be honest about that too.

“We are aware of the position we are in and what it means. We are in a place we did not imagine, but we are also in a place where we have to take it seriously and do our best.

“We have to do that first on Saturday. We are playing to be in the cup final and to fight for a trophy, and it's about doing our best in the situation we have found ourselves in.

“It is a mixture of being aware of the mistakes we have made, but also knowing that we cannot wallow in that any longer. We have to put on a positive mindset and find out how we can turn it around.

“A cup final is important for our self-confidence and for winning trophies. The championship is gone now, and therefore we have to put everything we have into getting to the final and then getting that cup.

“So I’m looking forward to Saturday. We have a good starting point with a win at home, but it will be a difficult match against a Viborg team, which I think is a good football team, and which we also met last year in the cup.

“But of course we have to find a better level than we have shown especially in the last two matches, and we will of course do everything to go further."
