Neestrup: We're ready for Danish Superliga return
F.C. Copenhagen return to Danish Superliga action on Sunday when the Lions face FC Midtjylland at 4pm – and head coach Jacob Neestrup is looking forward to getting started.
After two UEFA Champions League ties and a number of friendlies in 2026 – plus a winter training camp – FCK will look to push ahead with their domestic campaign this weekend.
In an interview with FCK TV, the boss says: “It's a tough match, and a place where we know we've had a tough time for ten years. But they're also an opponent that we're looking forward to playing against, and who I think we've had some good matches and performances against, most recently across 2025.
“I expect a close and even match. You can win when you are at your best, but you can also win matches when you are second-best if you take advantage of your opportunities.
"I think we've shown the last couple of times that we've had more and more good periods. But in some of the periods where we've been at our best, we've ended up conceding a goal or two, which has given us more difficult conditions than what was otherwise possible."
FC Midtjylland sit in second place, eight points ahead of FCK – but Neestrup says the match is important for a number of reasons, not just the table.
"It is important in terms of climbing up the table, and it is important in terms of keeping other clubs behind, and it is important in terms of – and this is perhaps the most important thing – starting a new calendar year in Denmark and trying to be a better side than the way we ended 2025 in the Superliga," says Neestrup.
“We are looking forward to getting going after a good start. The players have trained well and we have played some good practice matches, especially the two at the training camp, and I am pleased with what I have seen.
“We tried to make ourselves competitive in the two Champions League matches, and it was a golden opportunity to take a step up in pace. All in all it has contributed to a good start to the year."
