When F.C. Copenhagen signed Zdenek Pospech, they got a player who as a right back can add both speed, routine, technique and as a “bonus” can unleash a fierce long-range shot.

Zdenek Pospech began playing football in FK Kyleðovice, a small Czech club in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. From age 13 to 18 Pospech played for SFC Opava – a small town not many kilometres from the town and club where Pospech’s carreer took off: FC Banik Ostrava

From 2001 to 2005 Pospech played 114 matches for FC Banik Ostrava and won the Czech championship in 2003/2004. It is easy to think that the management of Sparta Prague at that time had spotted that Pespech was a very good defender, because only a year later, he joined the biggest Czech club, Sparta Prague.

Pospech played 145 matches for Sparta Prague, and several of these in Europe’s finest tournament, the UEFA Champions League. Sparta Prague participated in the 2005/2006 season, but without any success, as Arsenal og Ajax Amsterdam won the group with great margin to the two other teams in the group.

When Pospech left Prague in January 2008 he was captain in Sparta, the leading club in the Czech League and the reigning Czech champions. Pospech has also made his debut in the Czech international team and was part of the Euro 2008-squad. Unfortunately, he became ill in the week before the tournament began, and he did not get any playing time in his countrys three games in the group stages.

As a defender, Pospech uses his foresight and timing to break up the opponents play. When it comes to the offensive play, Pospech combines well, not only closely with winger Christian Bolaños and midfield duo Claudemir and William Kvist, but also often finds his team mates with a precise pass. Finally he can fire from long distance and with quite some success; as he has proved on several occasions, most notably in September 2010 away at FC Midtjylland, where the right back picked up the ball in an advanced position to thunder home an effort that propelled FCK to a 3-0 win over the Jutland club.

Pospech’s right back position is one of the most secured in the squad. The Czech played all 19 games in the autumn half of the 2010/11 Superliga season, as well as starting every UEFA Champions League match. His sterling performance away at Panathinaikos was rewarded, as he was included in the UEFA Champions League team of the week.
