When F.C. Copenhagen signed Sölvi Geir Ottesen Jónsson – or just Sölvi Ottesen - they got their first ever Icelandic player in the squad.
Sölvi Ottesen played football back home in Iceland until 2004, where he left Víkingur and transferred to the Swedish club Djurgårdens IF. Sölvi Ottesen spent four years with Djurgårdens IF, and was part of winning the Swedish Championship in 2005 and the Swedish Cup in 2004 and 2005.
After four seasons in Sweden, Sölvi Ottesen came to Denmark before the 2008/09-season as he signed a contract with the Danish Superliga team SønderjyskE. Sölvi Ottesen was in two seasons a solid “block” in SønderjyskE’s line of defense, and he was probably one of the reasons that SønderjyskE is still to be found in the Superliga.
Not only is Ottesen a good defender, he is also very useful when it comes to attacking set pieces. He demonstrated this early on in his FCK career to great effect. In the 3rd round of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, Ottesen rose high to meet a Claudemir throw in and score the vital goal against Rosenborg, sending Copenhagen through.
By signing Sölvi Ottesen FC Copenhagen added a player with considerable strength in any man-to-man situation. He proved his toughness when returning from a broken arm early, playing with a cast in the FCK back line. The injury did not prevent him from scoring a last-gasp winner against Lyngby in October 2010 to maintain Copenhagen’s fine start to that season. | |||
